Entertainment Unit Ideas: 4 Considerations to Make Before Buying

Canadians watch 30 hours of television per week, according to the most recent report published by the Television Bureau of Canada.

78% of that viewing was done in the family room. These statistics highlight the value of having a quality entertainment unit in your home.

An entertainment unit can add a lot of benefits to an activity we spend so much of our leisure time on.

And even though handheld devices are popular, the data shows that while at home, the vast majority of people prefer to enjoy their movies or TV shows on a bigger screen in a comfortable setting.

Consider these four entertainment unit ideas before buying.

1. An entertainment unit enhances any room’s look

Your family room, rec room, bedroom, or home theater room will look even better with a well-designed entertainment unit.

Unless it’s in a home theater, an entertainment unit (even a large-sized one) actually shouldn’t be the focus of the room. It should complement your room’s decor, just like any other piece of furniture.

A custom-built unit can do more than just house your electronics and store your media. There are multi-purpose aspects that an entertainment unit can bring to your room’s decor. You can outfit the unit with a roaring gas fireplace or a handy liquor cabinet and bar.

2. You get what you pay for

The type of mass-produced entertainment unit sold in big box stores that requires you to assemble them are inexpensive for a good reason.

They’re plagued by poor wood quality that’s prone to sagging and fake glued-on finishes that don’t stay stuck. Surely that’s not a befitting home for the high quality TV and audio/video components you’ve worked hard to purchase.

Avoid this type of cheaply constructed entertainment unit. Experience tells you that it simply won’t last.

A well-crafted, custom-built unit will assuredly outlast the lifespan of your TV and audio/video components. They also look much nicer, adding beauty to your room even when the television isn’t being used.

3. Create your dream entertainment unit

Durability and looks aren’t the only benefit of buying a custom-built entertainment unit.

Going the custom-built route opens up the ability for more colour options and other design choices, so you can create the exact type of entertainment unit you want.

This design flexibility will also allow for a more harmonious union with your room’s decor.

4. Looks and functionality combined

You’ll appreciate the functionality an entertainment unit brings to your room.

Keep your DVDs, Blu-rays, and video games organized and easy to find, either behind closed doors or displayed for all to see and get a sense of your pop culture tastes.

We all use so many types of technological components nowadays. Keeping any combination of your flat screen TV, receiver, DVD player, Blu-ray player, streaming device, PVR, cable receiver, and gaming console organized can be a challenge.

An entertainment unit can accommodate all of them in an organized fashion. The unit’s design also conceals all those unsightly cables and cords and provides the necessary ventilation for your electronics, ensuring them a longer life.

Entertainment Unit: 5 Ways to Maximize Your Wall Space

Don’t let a small space limit how you entertain.

Custom storage solutions allow you to maximize wall space and create a functional entertaining area in your home.

Here are five ways to maximize wall space with an entertainment unit in a small room.

1. Add horizontal storage

Every living room needs storage space to prevent clutter and help you stay organized. Instead of relying on multiple small furniture pieces for storage, take advantage of the length of a wall with one long, integrated storage solution.

A counter height and depth console is the right height for a flat screen TV and can be custom outfitted with closed and open storage.

Mix cupboards, drawers and shelves based on your entertainment storage needs.

2. Install a floor-to-ceiling unit

Take advantage of vertical space by making your entertainment unit as tall as possible.

Keep functional items for entertaining within reach, use open shelves for displaying and to store game systems, electronics, board games, etcetera behind closed doors.

3. Hide a bed

Horizontal or vertical storage can be custom outfitted with a wall bed for overnight guests. Invisible when tucked away, a fold-out bed can be incorporated with plenty of storage built in around it.

4. Incorporate a bar

If your living room is not large enough for a home bar, no problem! You can add a mini-bar to your entertainment unit that allows you to easily mix drinks and serve guests without even leaving the room.

Be sure to include under-mount cabinet lighting to enhance the bar’s functionality and ambience.

5. Get cozy with a fireplace

An entertainment unit does more than just house your TV and store your DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

It also allows you to enjoy cozy features, such as a gas or electric fireplace, without requiring additional room. Warm up on a chilly night with a fireplace installed beneath the TV.

TV Position: How High Off The Floor Should My TV Screen Be?

Before adding a custom entertainment unit to a room, one of the most important questions you’ll have to ask yourself is, “How high off the floor should my TV screen be?”

TV position matters for more than just aesthetic reasons. It’s about comfort, too.

Consider the last time you sat in the front row of a movie theatre. Were you very comfortable? Probably not. That’s because you were forced to look up to watch the movie, and this can cause soreness after a while.

For comfortable viewing, the middle of your TV screen when located in your entertainment unit should be at eye level or slightly below.

This means that you’ll have to calculate eye level (with a tape measure) by sitting on your sofa or recliner.

Measure the distance from the floor to your eyes while in a seated position, and keep in mind other people in your house who are taller or shorter.

Measurements don’t have to be exact, so if your spouse is a different height, you can either calculate the average or measure the eye level for the tallest person in the house.

Once you know how high the middle of your TV screen should be, measure the height of your TV and subtract that number by half. Then subtract the TV’s base height to determine the ideal measurements for your custom entertainment centre.

Again, you don’t have to 100% exact, but this will give you a good idea of the most comfortable viewing position. If you need to, position the screen a little lower than your ideal viewing height, rather than higher.

Keep in mind that certain sitting positions, like reclining, can affect eye level, and you might prefer your TV in a higher position, such as above the fireplace.

In the end, it’s all about what feels most comfortable to you and what height provides the most enjoyable viewing experience.

Keep the merriment going with a liquor cabinet and bar

With plenty of counter and cabinet space, you can easily serve friends and family their favourite drinks – without having to leave the room.

There is even enough cabinet space to store glassware and other bar essentials.

Add ambience with undercabinet lighting

When mixing a cocktail, undercabinet lighting will come in handy. Undercabinet lighting provides functional and ambient lighting.

Plus, our fixtures feature a subtle style that matches the entertainment unit’s striking design.

Create a cozy space with a fireplace

There’s no better time to gather around the fireplace than the holidays. Consider adding a gas fireplace to your entertainment unit to give your living room a warm and inviting look.

Wow guests with a home theater system

Bring everyone together to watch your favourite holiday movies on the big screen. Friends and family will be envious of your new home theater system.

And with a glowing fire in the background and drinks in hand, watching TV will be an even more enjoyable experience.
